The Municipality of Alcantara intends to promote sports tourism not just in the town but also in the whole province by hosting the inaugural season of the Pilipinas Vismin Super Cup.

The Vismin Super Cup is the first professional basketball league outside of Manila. The league will consist of players and teams from different regions in Visayas and Mindanao.

The town of Alcantara in the southwestern part of Cebu was chosen by Vismin Super Cup to be the host town for its Visayas leg.

According to Mayor Fritz Lastimoso, this will give the town the chance to not only promote its historic churches and pristine beaches but also sports tourism.

“Alcantara is a fifth-class municipality. I would say that Alcantara is very honored to host such a big league. Our objective for Alcantara is sports tourism and it (Vismin Super Cup) coins with the vision and a realization of the vision of Alcantarahanons,” he said.

The league’s organizing body initially considered other towns in the province, but according to Rocky Chan, chief operations officer of the league, Alcanatara’s all-out support expressed by Mayor Lastimoso made them pick Alcantara.

“Mayor Fritz was very much welcome when we presented the idea and it is part of the vision of the league to promote sports tourism in the region. We want to stay outside of the big cities and find a place such as Alcantara”, Chan said.

Bubble Concept

Because of the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic, Chan said that they have implemented strict health protocols in accordance with guidelines issued by the Games and Amusement Board and the Regional Inter-Agency Task Force in conducting sports leagues.

Members of each team have to get the antigen test before they are allowed to enter the bubble. Teams will be billeted in different resorts in the neighboring town of Moalboal.

“We have come up with a bubble concept in which players will just go to the venue to practice and back to their accommodation. They are not allowed to go out from their billeting facilities,” Chan said.

If a player or anyone from a team violates the rules, the team will have to pay a penalty and the violator will be automatically sent home.

For their part, Mayor Lastimoso said the town has activated its local risk reduction team and police force to implement the guidelines.

During their meeting with Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia on Wednesday, April 7, 2021, the league received support from the governor.

In fact, the governor allowed players to enjoy the fresh air and the beach in their respective resorts at certain hours each day as part of boosting their immune system.
Vismin Super Cup was officially launched at the Alcantara Civic Center on Friday, April 9.

Seven teams will compete in the league namely Siquijor Mystics, Bohol Mariners, Mandaue KCS Computer Solutions, Talisay M JAS Zenith, Tabogon Voyagers, Lapu-Lapu ARQ Builders and Dumaguete Warriors.

Only players, coaches and game officials will be allowed to witness the event to avoid crowding.

The Visayas leg will last for a month with three games per day and will be aired on Pilipinas Vismin Super Cup’s official Facebook page. (Paula Joy Mendoza)
